  Description:
Abstract: Lineations feature class. Contains representation class for point symbols from Section 9 of FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization (FGDC Document Number FGDC-STD-013-2006).
Purpose: This feature class is used to display the location, bearing and plunge of lineations measured in bedrock exposures. The lineations in this class are inclined fold hinges of small, minor anitclines.

    Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The geologic map, including the spot measurements of structural features, was compiled manually on mylar at a scale of 1:24,000 by the principal geologist based on standard geologic mapping techniques, which involve the integration and interpretation of field observations and, as appropriate, other available geologic information such subsurface data (e.g., drilling logs and cores). The original mylar includes symbolized measurements of geologic structural features such as attitude of beds and is the source of spatial and some attribute information. Digital attributes were captured from this mylar or developed separately during the creation of the structural layer in ArcInfo (see Process_Step). Additional structural point attributes in the attribute table were developed by the MGS GIS project coordinator with input from principal geologist.
To properly orient lineation structure symbols on map the bearing -plunge symbols, are measured. The bearing segment was aligned north-south (0-180 degrees) and the plunge, parallel to the bearing, perpendicular at 90 degrees. The symbol was rotated based on azimuth; similarly the other symbols start with the long segment, representing the trend, pointing to the north (0 degrees) and then each symbol was rotated based on azimuth (see also Positional_Accuracy).
Maryland Geological Survey performs quality assurance on the digital vector file by comparison of the digital data files and map (symbolized display) to the original map and mylars. Selected attributes that cannot be visually verified on plots or on screen are interactively queried and verified on screen by the GIS project coordinator.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for missing and duplicate features and feature attributes and other errors by the map author(s), GIS project coordinator and GIS specialist(s) who created the digital database. Hard copy prints of the map were reviewed by the MGS geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to mapping standards. The graphic data has been tested for consistency through the application of ArcGIS topologic testing. Polylines were tested to a 0.001 tolerance for overlap or gaps between line features and adjacent geologic formation polygons.
Completeness_Report: Updates may occur as needed or as additional data become available. Check MGS website for version number or contact MGS Publications Office (see Distribution_Information). Data are complete based on compilation at 1:24,000 scale.
  Positional_Accuracy:
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal accuracy of the digital vector file was tested by comparing proof plots with original stable-base film(s) of the map prepared by the principal geologist(s) at a scale of 1:24,000. The comparison was done visually by MGS geologists and the GIS team. For a single measurements of planar features, the point of observation is at the midpoint (center) of the symbol. For linear features, the point of observation is at the tail end of the symbol. For multiple measurements at one location (where symbols are combined), the point of observation is at the tail-end junction point common to all symbols. For digital symbol orientation/rotation, see Attribute_Accuracy. The difference in the positional accuracy between a structural point as drawn and digitized and the location in the field is difficult to quantify in geologic mapping of this type. In general, the locations are considered approximate.

Process_Description: Field measurements and observations of geologic structural features were recorded by a field geologist. These data along with other geologic field records were compiled onto a base topographic map (USGS 7.5-minute 1:24,000 topographic series). The final geologic compilation was drawn a stable-base material (Mylar), using the USGS 0.007-inch-thick film positive of the corresponding 7.5-minute topographic map as an underlying stable base. Spatial reference points were added to the geology mylar for georeferencing purposes.

The above-mentioned spatial reference points were used as linking points. When rectifying, nearest neighbor interpolation at a polynomial of 3 was used and attempts were made to achieve the lowest root mean square (RMS) error possible, which for the structural point layer was approximately 0.0002. NOTE: this RMS error is reported in geospatial units of the projection, which at this point are feet. (RMS error is not reported in digitizer inches or physical map inches or millimeters.)

Attribute_Definition: Also known as "plunge", is the angle of departure of the fold axis downward from horizontal, as measured parallel to the line of bearing. Information about the type of observation, as well as the values of bearing and plunge, is specified as feature attributes in the geologic map database. Such information also is represented on the geologic map by specialized point symbols and associated annotation: the strike value and the direction of dip are implicit in the orientation of the point symbol; the dip value is added as annotation.

    Attribute:
      Attribute_Label: SymbolRotation
Attribute_Definition: Orientation point features require that the symbol be rotated on the map by the bearing/plunge angle to accurately represent the orientation of geologic features. Where geologists measure and record the bearing as an azimuth, with north as 0, measured in a clockwise direction, representations use graphic rotation, with 0 at the top, measured in a counterclockwise direction. A simple calculation is required to properly plot representation symbols: Symbol rotation value = 360 - bearing (or azimuth) value. This calculation is performed using the Field Calculator in the ArcGIS geodatabase.
