Version HAGER2013.1 (July, 2013)

Funding for this map was provided by the Maryland State Highway Administration and the STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Project.

The data are projected in the Maryland State Plane Coordinate System FIPS 1900 (Lambert conformal conic projection, NAD83, meters). ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 was used to create the map.

The geologic map and data are available in the following formats:

  * ESRI ArcGIS 9.3.1 file geodatabase and .MXD file format;
  * Adobe Acrobat PDF format;
  * ESRI shape file format

The main GIS map document is HAGER_2013_1.mxd in the \ArcGIS_Files\ folder, which should be opened with ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1. Use ArcGIS Explorer to view the GIS data if you do not have ArcGIS Desktop. ArcGIS Explorer can be obtained from http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/explorer .

Metadata for each dataset and feature class are embedded in the ArcGIS geodatabase. Plain text files of the metadata are also included in the \Document\metadata\ folder.

ArcGIS data are located in the \ArcGIS_Files\ folder. Shape files for use in compatible software are located in the \shape\ folder. The \Documentation\ folder contains text files in MSDOS (.txt) and MS Word (.doc) formats. These documents contain information about the map and its contents. The PDF map can be found in the \PDF\ folder.

Colors on the PDF map vary considerably from the ArcGIS document. This is due to a rendering issue in the ArcGIS-to-PDF export function in ArcGIS Desktop.

Three US Geological Survey products are included for documentation. The FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization document is included because there are numerous references to this standard in the metadata. The PDF file is located in the \Documentation\ folder. Also, the FGDC GeoAge geologic font symbol set used in this map is included in the \ArcGIS_Files\style\FGDCGeoAgeFont_win_unix\ folder. For more information about these products see http://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/2006/11A02/ .

The Hagerstown, MD_PA quadrangle used as a base for this map is also included in the \ArcGIS_Files\basemap\ folder. The quadrangle is in USGS US Topo georeferenced PDF format. The metadata for this map is in the same folder. More information about USGS US Topo products can be found at http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/ .

Data should not be used at a scale greater than that.

Field mapping of karst features was conducted in 2009 through 2011. This map was compiled in digital form by Robert D. Conkwright of the Maryland Geological Survey, July 2013.
