  Description:
    Abstract:
This shapefile contains the Province-level physiographic subdivisions of Maryland in ArcGIS format. The file was developed from components of a detailed digital physiographic map of Maryland by James P. Reger and Emery T. Cleaves, currently in progress.
Physiography is the study and classification of the natural landscape of the earth and the landforms that comprise it. The approach for the detailed physiographic map of Maryland is hierarchical and descriptive. Subdivisions are based on similarities (within) and differences (among) geologic structure, rock type, geomorphic history, and topographic characteristics. Data and subdivisions were compiled at a 1:100,000 scale for the detailed state-wide map. The hierarchical classification of the detailed physiographic map (in progress) includes subdivisions as follows, in descending order (and generally decreasing size): Province, Section, Region, District, Area. In Maryland there are portions of five physiographic Provinces.
In this file, the polygons reflect Province level subdivision. The polygon feature attribute table has been developed to pertain only to the Provinces level. The table includes information on dominant rock types, geologic structure, topographic relief, and drainage pattern.
Purpose: Although the primary purpose of the detailed map (in progress) is to develop the first physiographic map of Maryland that classifies the landscape to a greater degree than Section level, this file has been developed specifically at the Province level for general use by the public. The purpose of producing the map using ArcInfo is to allow spatial analyses as part of a geographic information system. The GIS format facilitates synergism between physiography and other disciplines and derivative work involving ecosystems management, hydrologic regions, watersheds, vegetation, and soils.
Supplemental_Information: This file is projected in the Maryland State Plane Coordinate System (Lambert conformal conic projection, NAD83, meters). Data in this file were compiled at a 1:100,000 scale as part of a digital map (to be available in print/PDF version at 1:250,000).

    Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attributes were developed by MGS geologists. The source physiographic map was hand drawn on stable-base film (e.g., Mylar or Herculene) at a scale of 1:100,000 by the principal geologist based on standard physiographic mapping techniques, which involves the integration and interpretation of field observations and visual analysis of geologic and topographic maps. The original hand-drawn map includes physiographic contact lines and coded labels for the physiographic map units, which were incorporated during digitization.
The principal geologist also prepared a master table of attribute data for each of the units in the physiographic subdivisions. The MGS GIS project coordinator/editor extracted attributes from this master table at the physiographic Province level and joined to the feature attribute table to provide full Province-level attribution for this file.
Feature attributes were then verified visually in the ArcInfo attribute tables; attributes linked to map layout components were verified visually on the map both in print and symbolized display on-screen.
Maryland Geological Survey performs quality assurance on the digital vector file by comparison of the digital data files and map to the original films. Selected attributes that cannot be visually verified on plots or on screen are interactively queried and verified on screen by the GIS project coordinator and GIS specialist(s). (See also Positional_Accuracy.)
Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure and other errors by the GIS project coordinator and GIS specialist(s) who created the digital database. Hard copy prints of the map were reviewed by the MGS geologists for consistency with basic geologic and physiographic principles and general conformity to mapping standards.
Completeness_Report: This file contains data that were extracted at the physiographic Province level from work still in progress.
  Positional_Accuracy:
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
      Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal accuracy of the digital vector file was tested by comparing proof plots with original film(s) of the map prepared by the principal geologist(s) at a scale of 1:100000. The comparison was done visually by MGS geologists and the GIS team.
The difference in the positional accuracy between the physiographic unit contacts as drawn and digitized and the contacts in the field is difficult to quantify in mapping of this type and contacts are considered approximate. Physiographic boundary lines that were determined by change in slope are influenced by the contour interval of the base map(s). For the US Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic maps (30x60-minute series) used as a base maps for drafting compilation, contour intervals ranged across the state from a 2-meter interval in the southern part of the Eastern Shore to a 50-meter interval in part of westernmost Maryland, depending upon topographic relief. Most of the 30x60-minute series maps covering western Maryland were contoured at 20-meter intervals and most of the central and southern Maryland series were contoured at 10-meter intervals.

    Process_Step:
Process_Description: Description of original physiographic compilation at 100,000 scale: Physiographic subdivisions were delineated on paper topographic maps at scales of 1:24,000 and/or 1:62,500 through a combination of field observation and evaluation of topographic and geologic maps of similar scales. Those subdivision boundaries were subsequently transferred by hand to a stable-base drafting medium registered to the stable-base films of USGS 30x60-minute quadrangles (topographic) covering Maryland at a scale of 1:100,000. A total of 18 30x60-minute quadrangles (in whole or part) were needed to cover Maryland. Six to eight spatial reference points (generally at the map corners and 15- or 30-minute intervals) were added to each physiography sheet for georeferencing purposes. Composites of the physiography layer and the topographic base layer were photocopied for all the 30x60-minute quadrangles, and those paper copies were checked, re-checked, and revised as necessary prior to digitization. Any changes were then transferred to the 1:100,000-scale base-stable maps. Although some subdivision boundaries were generalized or smoothed from those of the 1:24,000 and 1:62,500-scale compilations, the vast majority of the detail of the larger scale maps was retained on the smaller scale maps.

      Process_Description:
Development of the detailed digital physiographic map (this process step is incomplete--currently digital map is interim draft only):
The stable-base sheets containing the inked physiographic subdivision boundaries scanned by the Center for Geographic Information Science (CGIS) at Towson University, with subsequent raster to vector conversion and edge-matching on the State Plane Coordinate System (NAD83, meters) to create a composite vector coverage of the entire state to be printed at scales of 1:100,000 or smaller.
CGIS and MGS need to complete the process and handling steps for interim work as well as final version, once work is completed. Key issues to address will include geoprocessing, reprojection, land-water boundaries and other boundaries. Note that interim map was composed in the layout function of ArcMap, using colors and symbols derived from the project geologists. Annotation for map components was developed. A draft PDF version of this entire map layout was prepared for review.

Development of the Province-level excerpt and compilation (from INTERIM DRAFT of Detailed Physiographic Map):
1.) Detailed physiographic units were dissolved on the Province-level subdivisions. The source coverage was in the current Maryland State Plane Coordinate System, (North American Datum 1983, Lambert Conformal Conic Projection, meters).
        2.) Polygon topology was built.
3.) Coverage polygons were exported to a polygon shapefile (ESRI ArcGIS) format.
4.) Pertinent Province-level information was extracted from data tables and then joined to polygon feature attribute table.
5.) Spatial and attribute data for this coverage along with other geospatial data for the map were reviewed and edited by project geologists and GIS specialists.
6.) Metadata was written, parsed and imported to shapefile. Metadata was also exported in text format to provide a stand-alone file to facilitate access and review.

  Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: In the ArcGIS file for the detailed physiographic map, each Physiographic Province, Section, Region, District, and Area has been assigned a six-digit number for identification. These numbers help keep track of the hierarchical organization of the physiographic units. Of the six digits, the first (reading from left to right) represents a Province, the second represents a Section, the third a Region, the fourth a District, and the last two an Area. This accommodates up to nine Provinces, nine Sections per Province, nine Regions per Section, and nine Districts per Region, but up to 99 Areas per District. For example, 100000 represents the Appalachian Plateaus Province, 110000 represents the Allegheny Mountains Section of that Province, 112000 the Allegheny High Plateau Region, 112400 the Oakland District, and 112401 the White Meadow Run Area of the Oakland District. In this file, prepared for public distribution, data apply primarily to the Province-level subdivisions.
Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: A separate document entitled "Explanation to Accompany the Physiographic Map" will accompany the final detailed physiographic map. This document contains more detailed information about the physiographic map and the attributes associated with each physiographic subdivision. Contact the Maryland Geological Survey if additional details are needed.
